Democrats win the House and Senate in a rebuke to Trump
AP projects Democrats took both chambers in Tuesday’s midterms, flipping Senate seats in states including Texas, Ohio, Iowa and Kansas. Mississippi’s Senate race was too early to call and Alaska’s was unresolved.
WHY  In AP’s voter survey, about three-quarters rated the economy not so good or poor. Democrats promise a cost-of-living agenda and investigations; Trump vows to veto their bills. The new Congress sits in January.
2
Iran talks stall as Trump floats a “heavy hit”
US officials called Monday’s strikes on Qeshm Island limited and defensive, after Iranian fire on a US aircraft. Trump told Fox News a large action may be needed, and that there may be no reason for it.
WHY  Iran says Hormuz stays shut until the US ends its blockade, waives oil sanctions and frees its funds; Trump says Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. Qatari mediators are carrying proposals, and AP reports Netanyahu is pressing for new strikes. Trump has not decided.

South Africa’s school HPV programme cut high-risk infections by 83%
Among 2,357 people aged 17–18, HPV 16/18 prevalence fell from about one in five to about three in 100 after the 2014 rollout. Among girls living with HIV the drop was 82%.
WHY  About 87% of eligible girls got a dose in year one, and only vaccine-targeted types fell, which points to the vaccine, not behaviour. Cervical cancer takes decades, so researchers will keep tracking the 2024 single-dose schedule.

New South Wales passes the Great Koala National Park
Parliament approved a 476,000-hectare park on the mid-north coast meant to protect more than 12,000 koalas, including 176,000 hectares from state forest.
WHY  It took more than a decade of campaigning, and funding rests on a carbon-credit scheme that pays to leave public forests unlogged. The Bob Brown Foundation says vital forests were left out and that its campaign continues.

Chip stocks lifted the Nasdaq while Apple’s margin outlook dragged on the Dow, and Brent fell on hopes for a US-Iran deal. After the sweep, Fox Business had S&P futures up 0.35% early Wednesday and the 10Y down 6bp, as investors weighed AI and Big Tech scrutiny.

Essays & Arguments
Once the logistics are handled, you still have to decide what you want. Priyanka Desai has an agent that clears her inbox, and now wonders which frictions were worth keeping. Henrik Karlsson gets unstuck by a plain question, not an answer. Tolstoy’s king pays for answers and finds the experts disagree. Asking may be the part you can’t delegate.

Today’s question
If an agent runs your calendar, what is left that only you can decide?
ESSAY  Sour · Priyanka Desai
Agents made Desai more organized and more social offline while her online life turned inward. Instinct, the same agent that texts you, bought her Broadway tickets from a photo of a flyer; she spends more now, because friction was her budget. The “wasted” hours on Discord and Substack were what led to meetups, and she ends unsure which frictions to keep. Feeds your note on agents giving freedom and taking power.
ESSAY  Henrik Karlsson
Karlsson argues a precise question helps more than advice: why does it feel bad, what are you trying to achieve, what are the alternatives, what would make the biggest difference. When a draft felt off, his wife asked why, and naming the contrived ending gave him the fix. From Richard Hamming he takes a sense of direction, held loosely. Extends your note on mentally pathing toward an outcome.
STORY  marxists.org · Leo Tolstoy
A king decides he could never fail if he knew the right time to act, the right people to heed, and the most important thing to do. He offers a reward, the learned men all disagree, and he goes to a hermit who speaks only with plain folk. About nine minutes long, it has lasted because it turns a management problem into a moral one.

WORKFLOW  Drew Breunig
When an agent fixates on a bad hypothesis, more context makes it worse, and compaction doesn’t cure it: dead ends stay in the transcript and get cited again. One Qwen agent debugged package versions for hours when the endpoint was the real bug. The useful habit: when a session circles, reset with a short handoff note instead of arguing with it.

On Your Radar
PREDICTION MARKETS  Yahoo Finance
On the eve of the vote, markets gave Democrats 73.1% for the Senate and polling models 80.3%, so both pointed the right way and the polls were more confident. Over $1.2 billion traded, more than Kalshi’s 2024 presidential volume. If both agree, what is the money adding?
STARTUPS  Latent Space
Legora, valued at $8.8B in October, can’t read client data, so it tests agents in simulated settings such as a 10,000-file due diligence room. Its CTO says faster work is pushing routine tasks from billable hours to flat fees. Banking’s junior hours face the same arithmetic.
